All-round CSK thump Gujarat Titans 2024

Chennai Super Kings were clinical with both bat and ball as they comprehensively thrashed Gujarat Titans to register their second win in IPL 2024. Filled with powerful performances with the bat, their bowlers reflected a collective effort to ensure that Gujarat was never the same. allowed them to squeeze their way back into the game, condemning them to a 63-run loss.

Ravindra provides the motivation at the top.

CSK got someone to keep them going during the innings. The role was taken up by Rachan Ravindra through the power play who scored 47 runs in an opening stand of 62 runs with Rutoraj Gaikwad. Ravindra first went after Umesh Yadav’s missed length, hitting a six and a four off consecutive balls. In the next over, he did the same to Azmatullah Umarzai. When Yadav opted for a slightly shorter length next time, he still couldn’t get away with it as Ravindra hit another six and a four. The flow of boundaries did not stop as Umarzai made a similar mistake to be removed immediately. Ravindra’s blitzkrieg ended in misfortune when he was stumped after the ball bounced off his body and was close to wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha.

No loss of speed.

Next time Ajinkya Rahane could not maintain the tone set by Ravindra as he was stumped after 12 runs a ball. He raced to 46 but just as he was looking for more, Spencer Johnson got an edge from the delivery. But by now, CSK’s next hitters – and the ones that had the most impact – were ready.

Dube cuts loose.

Shivam Dubey played his part as he faced the first two balls – against the favorable match of Sai Kishor’s left-arm spin – for sixes. That set him up beautifully for the rest of the innings as he continued to move forward. Rashid Khan was also hit for a six before Johnson hit a four and a six when the short ball went for a toss. He scored his fifty off just 22 balls and looked set for a big finish in the final two overs.

Mixed returns on death.

Rashid Khan did better than Dube with a googly early in the 19th over to boost Gujarat’s hopes of a breakthrough. However, debutant Sameer Rizvi had other ideas. He hit his first ball six in the IPL when he slug-swept Rashid and followed it up with a six over long-off to ensure it turned into a 15-run over. But Mohit Sharma’s last over went for just eight runs and Rizvi was dismissed at long-on as CSK put up a total of over 200, which eventually proved more than enough.

A chase that goes nowhere

Gujarat depended on a good start in the powerplay to mount a challenge in the chase. Both Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha made their intentions clear until Gill hit his first ball for a six but neither managed to sustain it for long. Deepak Chahar was lbw off Gayle while Saha gave Chahar his second wicket. At 34/2, Gujarat were already on the back foot.

CSK keep control

With the tone set, none of Gujarat’s middle-order batsmen could do enough to reverse the pressure. It didn’t help that CSK kept the momentum going. Experienced MS Dhoni and Ajinkya Rahane each had quick chances while Richan Ravindra dropped one but three more ensuring collective control was not allowed to hold true till the end.

What next?

Chennai play their first ‘away’ game of the season when they travel to Vizag, the temporary ‘home’ for Delhi Capitals this season. On the same day – Sunday, March 31 – Gujarat Titans will return home to take on Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Brief Scores: Chennai Super Kings 206/6 in 20 overs (Shyam Dubey 51, Richan Ravindra 46, Rutoraj Gaekwad 46) beat Gujarat Titans 143/8 in 20 overs (Sai Sudharsan 37; Tushar Deshpande 2-21) )
